It will also serve as the title for a weekly post of various events, opportunities, and other activities on campus that the Bell Resource Center will inform Black men about. OUTREACH

Greetings from the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and First Year Experience. My name is Michele Brown, and I am looking for help. I am working on a new initiative – Early College Outreach. We want to help more Columbus students go to college, and to be prepared to succeed and graduate. I am developing several approaches for this initiative - presentations, campus visits, and print materials.

I am looking for students to highlight in a new brochure. This brochure is targeted for younger students – middle school – and will focus on why college is important and how to prepare.

I will be interviewing current OSU students during Spring Quarter to provide “real life” examples and advice. If you are interested, or if you have any questions, please let me know by April 12, 2006.

THE MAJOR AND CAREER CHECK-UP

For students unsure about their academic major, the expo is an opportunity to make contact with career counselors who can help with decision-making and college representatives who can assist with exploration of academic programs.

Students who are already enrolled in a college or major but are unsure about next steps will be able to explore additional academic options and speak with career counselors about career paths and strategies for transitioning to the workforce.

Finally, students preparing to search for jobs and internships will be able to get feedback on their resumes, obtain information about job search and interview skills, and learn more about the various colleges’ internship programs, recruiting events, and other employment services.

WHITE HOUSE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
The White House Internship Program offers an excellent opportunity to serve our President and explore public service. We are seeking exceptional candidates to apply for this highly competitive program. In addition to normal office duties, interns attend weekly lectures, tours, and complete an intern service project. Interns may serve a term in the Fall, Spring or Summer. All candidates must be at least 18 years of age, hold United States citizenship,

SUMMER JOB WITH UPWARD BOUND IN MILWAUKEE

Summer Counselors reside in the residence halls in downtown Milwaukee with the students from Sunday night until Friday afternoon. Students are in
class from 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. and Summer Counselors function as Teaching Assistants, office workers and provide residence hall coverage
during those hours. After 3:00 p.m. until 11:00 p.m., students are involved in a range of activities both on-campus and off-campus and Summer
Counselors provide coordination and supervision during those activities. Counselors also serve as role models and mentors for students.

Counselors are compensated with room and board for 7 weeks (1 week of training preceding the program and 6 weeks during the program) and a
stipend of at least $2525.00.

Preferred qualifications are Junior status with strong academic record, previous work with youth, previous work with multicultural populations,
major in Education, Social Work, Youth Work or related field, maturity, high level of responsibility, and a commitment to providing educational
access to low-income, first generation students. We are dedicated to creating a diverse staff and diverse and/or bilingual applicants or
applicants who have overcome barriers similar to those of our students are strongly encouraged to apply.

MARY DANIELS SCHOLARSHIP

The Department of Recreational Sports invites all graduate, professional, or undergraduate Ohio State students to apply for the Mary A. Daniels Scholarship for Student Campus Leadership and Academic Achievement. The Daniels Scholarship fund was set up to provide awards of up to $1,500 each year to students who positively influence the university and excel in academics and campus leadership in terms of involvement and initiative. Applicants will be measured based on transcripts, academic and leadership awards, and strength of references. The number of winners and individual award amounts will depend on the merit of the pool of applicants. Last year’s winners Yoonhee Ha, a Finance and Political Science major, and Katherine Reeves, a Health Sciences and Geriatrics major, each received a $1,500 award based on their academic achievements and commitment to campus leadership. Interested students should send a completed application form, a rationale statement under 1000 words, an official copy of a current transcript, and two letters of recommendation to Beau Rugg, B106 RPAC, 336 W. 17th Ave., Columbus, OH 43210. SLATER/JOHNSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP ESSAY COMPETITION

“Without Struggle There is No Progress”

All undergraduate students at The Ohio State University are encouraged to participate in this essay contest commemorating a historical event in the advancement of African-American people. Students must submit an essay no greater than 1500 words that speaks to theme of this year’s scholarship banquet using the following prompt:

Frederick Douglass (1818-1895) was born into the merciless brutalities of U.S. chattel slavery. Despite severe abuse, separation from family, and influences designed to impede his progress, Douglass became the leading spokesperson for the emancipation of African-Americans. In 1845 his autobiography, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, was published. His story is a story of accomplishments despite obstacles. How do you think the message “without struggle, there is no progress” relates to your own autobiography? Describe a time in your life when you maneuvered road blocks or scaled over mountains. Write about these instances in relationship to your education. In doing so, please familiarize yourself with Douglass’s message and refer to it specifically in your writing. In particular, chapters 7 & 8 describe Douglass’s struggle to learn how to read and write. How did he overcome challenges to his educational pursuits? How did/do you?

Deadline for all essay submissions: Friday April 21st, 2006 by 5:00 pm. Finalists will be notified in advance and must attend the banquet. Winners will be announced at this year’s Scholarship Banquet, Saturday, May 20, 2006 at 6pm. All finalists will receive a prize.

LANTERN NEWSPAPER PROGRAM

informational session about The Lantern. Four African-American students
who are current staff members at The Lantern will talk about their own
experiences in the newsroom and give advice for anyone looking to get

former Lantern photographer and a current Lantern intern and course TA;
Katelyn Jackson, a senior who is a former Lantern reporter and current
copy editor; Veronica Walker, a senior who is a current Lantern news
editor and former course TA and Lantern reporter; and Gerrick Lewis, a
freshman who is a past and current arts reporter. The Lantern faculty
