This is the essay question for the Slater/Johnson Scholarship Banquet held on May 3, 2008 from 12p.m.-2p.m. All African American undergraduates are eligible to participate.

Given the many socioeconomic problems plaguing the nation i.e. the economic downspiral, housing and healthcare crises, the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, rising incarceration rates among African Americans, racially charged incidents such as the Jena Six, etc.

What is the role of the black professional/scholar in the twentieth-first century? What are some of the approaches that black professionals should take to remedy these issues?

In a 3-4 page, double-spaced, 12 font essay please provide substantive strategies to address these various problems. Make sure your name and e-mail address is on every page of the essay.

You are not soley restricted to address the problems mentioned above, you can focus on other relevant social issues concerning African Americans. For the second part of the question, pick three or four issues plaguing the African American community that you think are the most pressing.
