Important Current Events
One of the things that majoring in Politcal Science has taught me is the importance of being informed on current events. How can we become educated and productive citizens if we don't know what is happening in the world around us? A new feature of the blog will focus on current events that are important, interesting, and meaningful to our daily lives. As educated men, its important to know what's going on.
The G-20 or Group of the world's 20 largest economies is currently meeting in London, England. Barack Obama will have quite a challenge in trying to convince global leaders that the way to end the recession is to spend more money to stimulate the world economy. While only time will tell if these tactics will work, it is refreshing to see a president that actually knows how to conduct honest and purposeful diplomacy.
President Obama also offered reconciliation to members of the Taliban who were not affiliated with Al-Qaeda. Negotiations are currently underway to reach compromises similar to the one that Pakistani officials made with Taliban leaders in the Swat Valley last month. While some critisize the negotiations as being too lenient, they could go a long way towards reducing violence in the middle east. A spokesman for the Mullah Mohammed Omar, leader of the taliban, said yesterday that the only way to bring about peace was if all foreign troops left Afghanistan.
Today North Korea threatened war if Japan shot down a missile that is to be launched in the near future. The planned launch of the alleged satelite carrying missile is believed to be aimed at furthering North Korea's rogue ballistic missile program. The defense minister of Japan vowed to shoot down any North Korean object that violated Japanese airspace. The US and other governments are currently lodging complaints with the UN Security Council concerning the matter.
