Multicultural Center is seeking students for Winter Intergroup Dialogue Courses (Edu P&L 270.04)
Intergroup Dialogue (IGD) courses are three-credit courses designed to bring together students from different social identity groups in a sustained and facilitated learning environment. IGD engages students to explore issues of diversity and inequality and their personal and social responsibility for building a more just society. To enroll in an intergroup dialogue:
- Email Jennifer Nakhla, jnakhla@studentlife.osu.edu, for an enrollment request form
- You will be notified by Multicultural Center (MCC) staff about the status of your enrollment request
- Once your request is granted, you will be able to register for the course
Intergroup Dialogues are 3-credit courses carefully structured to explore social group identity, conflict, community, and social justice. Each intergroup dialogue involves identity groups defined by race, ethnicity, religion, socioeconomic class, gender, sexual orientation, or national origin. Each identity group is represented in the dialogue by a balanced number of student participants, usually 5-8 participants from each group. Trained facilitators-one from each represented identity group-encourage dialogue rather than debate. Students examine and discuss reading materials that address issues and experiences relevant to the groups in the dialogue, in relation to both the University setting and general society. Facilitators and participants explore similarities and differences among and across groups, and strive toward building a multicultural and democratic community.

Christmas Wish Program
For the past 15 years, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Epsilon Chapter has hosted the Christmas Wish Program. Historically, the program aims to donate winter apparel and toys to kindergartners attending a local Columbus elementary school. This year we are striving to make the event even more impactful by donating to youth based organizations in the Columbus community and gaining the participation of OSU student organizations. We are asking organizations to encourage their membership to get involved in community service. We are asking organization members to collect coats, toys, hats, gloves, scarves, and school supplies for children at Cassady Elementary and several organizations in the Columbus community! The organization that collects the most items will receive a phenomenal prize from the members of Delta Sigma Theta and the Christmas Wish Program sponsors! If not for the prize, donate to support the less fortunate children of the Columbus area. Occasionally prayer is in a group setting, however most of the time it is intended for individual, personal, and intimate time with the Lord. Come join us as we command the morning and grow closer to God!

Struggling for Equality: The Progress of GLBT Rights in Ohio

Lynne Bowman, Executive Director of Equality Ohio, and Tara McKenzie Allison, Chief Legal Counsel for TransOhio, will discuss the history and progress of GLBT rights in Ohio. Fueled by the passage of Issue 1 on November 2, 2004, grassroots activists, organizational leaders and business representatives from around Ohio decided to join forces to make the Buckeye State a place that treats each citizen equally in the interpretation of its civil law. The result of their hard work was Equality Ohio. TransOhio was formed in 2007 as an organization whose primary focus is to help Ohio transgender people to have a better life by providing easy access to services, programs, education and information.

Native American Heritage Month
November is Native American Heritage Month (NAHM) which celebrates and educates students, staff, faculty and allies about the diversity within over 500 Nations/Tribes that were here before, during, and after contact. There will be a variety of venues including a Thanksgiving alternative/harvest celebration as well as a major highlighted event sponsored collaboratively with the American Indian Council (AIC), American Indian Student Initiatives (AISI), and American Indian Studies minor (AIS). Join the GLBT First Year Cohort
The GLBT First Year Cohort will create connections and community on the Ohio State University main campus for freshmen and transfer students who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or ally. The purpose of the cohort is to help GLBTA students who are new to campus navigate the many resources at OSU, provide peer support and guidance for them, and establish a community of first year students and mentors. With five outstanding upperclassman mentors, the cohort will build relationships and integrate students into the community through retreats, social justice events, coffee check-ins, and a Facebook group. Each first year will have a mentor and is expected to participate in some events each quarter. Call for Presenters
The Hale Black Cultural Center (HBCC) and the Black Graduate and Professional Student Caucus (BGPSC) will host a research conference culminating with the 15th Annual Slater/Johnson Memorial Scholarship Banquet. We are seeking to engage the scholarship of Black graduate students at OSU, in hopes to spur greater academic engagement of Black undergraduate students, while highlighting the benefits of research at The Ohio State University. Our goal is to attract current and past Black Graduate & Professional Students to submit Poster’s, Papers, and other scholarly presentations to be displayed at the HBCC for two weeks leading up to the BGPSC's 15th Annual Slater-Johnson Memorial Scholarship Banquet for May 8, 2010. The Presentation Posters will be displayed in the HBCC Main Hall, and Academic Classrooms. Selected presentations on PowerPoint will be played in the MLK Lounge and Smart Classrooms, with an opportunity for interactive video, web chat, and other online communications strategies. The invited sessions / presentations will focus on the HBCC six programmatic themes “Race, Politics, Economics, Community, Art and Culture” as it relates to the “documentation of the contribution of Blacks to the world of Arts, Letters and Science.” These six programmatic themes are in harmony with both the HBCC Mission and Purpose of the BGPSC, and uplift the overall mission of OSU as a research institution. Windtalkers is a 2002 action war film directed by John Woo, director of Face/Off. Nicolas Cage and Christian Slater star as two US Marine sergeants assigned to protect Navajo code talkers in Saipan during World War II.

Bring all your homework and enjoy some quiet studying time with other students. This will be greatly beneficial for any upcoming quizzes, midterms, or homework (lab reports, foreign language worksheets, webwork, flashcards, etc.). African American Voices Gospel Choir (AAVGC) Rehearsal

Join the GLBT First Year Cohort
The GLBT First Year Cohort will create connections and community on the Ohio State University main campus for freshmen and transfer students who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or ally. The purpose of the cohort is to help GLBTA students who are new to campus navigate the many resources at OSU, provide peer support and guidance for them, and establish a community of first year students and mentors. With five outstanding upperclassman mentors, the cohort will build relationships and integrate students into the community through retreats, social justice events, coffee check-ins, and a Facebook group. Each first year will have a mentor and is expected to participate in some events each quarter. Call for Presenters
The Hale Black Cultural Center (HBCC) and the Black Graduate and Professional Student Caucus (BGPSC) will host a research conference culminating with the 15th Annual Slater/Johnson Memorial Scholarship Banquet. We are seeking to engage the scholarship of Black graduate students at OSU, in hopes to spur greater academic engagement of Black undergraduate students, while highlighting the benefits of research at The Ohio State University. Our goal is to attract current and past Black Graduate & Professional Students to submit Poster’s, Papers, and other scholarly presentations to be displayed at the HBCC for two weeks leading up to the BGPSC's 15th Annual Slater-Johnson Memorial Scholarship Banquet for May 8, 2010. The Presentation Posters will be displayed in the HBCC Main Hall, and Academic Classrooms. Selected presentations on PowerPoint will be played in the MLK Lounge and Smart Classrooms, with an opportunity for interactive video, web chat, and other online communications strategies. The invited sessions / presentations will focus on the HBCC six programmatic themes “Race, Politics, Economics, Community, Art and Culture” as it relates to the “documentation of the contribution of Blacks to the world of Arts, Letters and Science.” These six programmatic themes are in harmony with both the HBCC Mission and Purpose of the BGPSC, and uplift the overall mission of OSU as a research institution. We are traveling to BELIZE, California, Colorado, Ohio, Chicago, Mississippi, Florida, Maine, Minnesota, New York, Boston, Washington, DC, and Kentucky this year for over 26 unforgettable experiences working with projects ranging from Habitat for Humanity, Art, and Animal Rescue to Women's Issues, HIV/AIDS, and Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation. Beat Michigan Week: Battle Against Hunger: Do your part to beat Michigan by bringing in Canned Goods from November 15-20. Ohio State is competing against Michigan to see who can bring in the most weight in canned goods. Drop off locations are Ohio Union, RPAC, Fresh Express, North Commons, Kennedy Commons, Off-Campus Student Services, Kuhn Honors and Scholars House, and Participating Residence Halls. ColumbusReads: Make the difference in the life of a child by tutoring for 1 hr each week. Ohio State students work with 2 Elementary schools in Columbus to tutor the kindergartners and first graders in reading. The program is completely organized by the school, tutors simply show up and work with their students each week for one hour. Transportation is provided if needed.
