Looking for a way to build your resume and develop your skills?  The American Red Cross Blood Services has 5 open unpaid internships that are based on OSU’s campus.  Are you interested in working with diverse populations, Red Cross staff, OSU Diversity Coalition members, volunteers, blood donors, and coordinators on blood drive-related activities?  Looking for a way to put your excellent organizational and detail orientation skills to use?  This could be for you.  The ideal candidate must commit to 10-15 hours per week with weekend commitments. Position: African American Subcommittee Leader-Diversity Coalition Intern

Purpose: To assist the Minority Market Researcher with various activities relating to the Diversity Coalition minority blood drives at OSU.

Key responsibilities:
·       Assist with all activities pertaining to Diversity Coalition blood drives.
·       Recruit and retain members for African American Subcommittee of the Diversity Coalition
·       Create and sustain committees for the African American Subcommittee of the Diversity Coalition 
·       Assist with prospecting for new blood drive locations and new sponsor groups.
·       Build partnerships, conduct speaking engagements, and disseminate information to recruit blood donors for 1-2 blood drives on The Ohio State University (OSU) campus per month
·       Create and maintain a database of all sponsor group information
·       Work with ARC staff, Diversity Coalition members, volunteers, donors, and coordinators on blood
      drive-related activities
·       Attend all required coalition, OSU Club, and Red Cross meetings and inform group members of changes as necessary (approx. 2 to 3 meetings per month)
·       Provide additional assistance to Minority Market Researcher as necessary

Time Commitment:
Approximately 10-15 hours per week with weekend commitments. Length of the internship is 3 academic quarters (the equivalent of one academic year or 9 months). Shift hours are mutually agreed upon and can vary based on blood drive schedules, needs of Minority Market Researcher and individual.    

Relationships:
·       Intern is the primary OSU Campus Contact for all African American Subcommittee Diversity Coalition drives
·       Reports to Minority Market Researcher for on-the-job training and supervision
·       Interaction with other Red Cross paid and volunteer staff as necessary
·       Ongoing interaction with diverse populations and the general public

Qualifications:
·       Dependable and responsible including the ability to follow timelines and meet predetermined deadlines in reference to blood drive planning
·       Excellent organizational skills and detail orientation
·       Ability to work independently and lead a team
·       Various office/computer skills such as data entry skills and email access
·       Public speaking skills including giving formal and informal presentations to small and large groups
·       Experience or interest in event planning and event logistics preferred
·       Positive professional appearance and demeanor

Required Training:
·                New Volunteer Orientation provided by the Office of Volunteers
·                Specific task training by Donor Recruitment Representative and/or other Red Cross employees

Position Title:             Volunteer Recruitment Member
            
Project Summary: The AmeriCorps Member will assist the Office of Volunteer and Community Resources of the American Red Cross Blood Services. This member will recruit volunteers from of the general public including youth volunteers and diverse volunteers, enabling us to meet the needs of the community in the Franklin County area. The member will engage in volunteer management and program and event planning including interviewing, screening, training, data management, record keeping, and volunteer recognition. This will be a full time position, and the member must complete 1700 hours in 12 months.

Key Responsibilities
·       Assists in application and follow-up procedures for volunteer applicants, which may include interviewing, screening and post-placement check-in.
·       Act as the department liaison for current contacts that refer prospective volunteers to the Office of Volunteers.
·       Plans, develops and implements recruitment strategies (including the ability to give presentations and/or participate in speaking engagements, and attend community events and volunteer recruitment fairs) targeting volunteers. 
·       Collaborates with local organizations and agencies (including schools and religious organizations) to promote American Red Cross volunteer opportunities.
·       Collaborates with departments throughout Blood Services in implementing special initiatives to mentor and involve youth in daily volunteer activities.
·       Plans, develops and implements programs and applicable training to ensure volunteers are knowledgeable about the American Red Cross, position expectations and how volunteer position performance contributes to the success of the organization.
·       Plans, coordinates, develops, and/or conducts volunteer management training for paid and volunteer staff to ensure they are properly prepared to work with, monitor and evaluate volunteers.
·       Plans, develops and implements recognition initiatives and activities for volunteers.
·       Participate in volunteer management professional organization events and activities.
·       Participate in American Red Cross Blood Services Volunteer Services Committee meetings.
·       Facilitate Red Cross CPR/FA/AED classes with Blood Services paid and volunteer staff as necessary.

·       Must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. National, or lawful resident alien of the U.S.
·       Must possess a current and valid driver’s license; good driving record

Position Title: Diversity Member
            
Project Summary: The AmeriCorps Member will support the Donor Services department of the American Red Cross Blood Services to connect with diverse organizations in the Franklin County area, including groups at colleges, religious organizations, social service agencies and community organizations, to build our blood donor base to better reflect the community.  They will help to plan and implement effective strategies to recruit and retain minority and diverse blood donor groups who will sponsor collection operations and work to achieve established blood collection goals.  They will develop potential group leads and educate blood donor groups on the need for minority donors as well as provide ongoing support to blood donor groups and implement appropriate special blood donor recruitment and recognition programs. 
This will be a full time position, and the member must complete 1700 hours in 12 months.

Key Responsibilities
·                Research community organizations, religious organizations and service agencies for potential prospects.
·                Present information to minority organizations to educate them on the importance of blood donation.
·       Identify, develop and implement creative strategies to attract potential minority blood mobile sponsors and feeder groups for existing bloodmobiles or donors for special collection programs.
·       Identify and apply appropriate methods to ensure efficient scheduling of blood mobiles/special donors by assigned groups to meet goals.
·       Provide sufficient organizational and operational support to blood donor groups to ensure achievement of goals.
·       Plan, develop and implement recognition initiatives and activities for targeted groups.
·       Work with interns
·       Participate as a member of the Diversity Task Force and Diversity Coalition at OSU.
·       Perform other related duties as necessary.

Position Title: Blood Drive Specialist, Donor Services
            
Project Summary:  The Americorps member will assist the Volunteer Recruitment Representative for Donor Services (DS) of the American Red Cross Blood Services Central Ohio Region to ensure scheduling and retention of current Blood Services volunteers to facilitate the Region’s collection of an adequate blood supply. To assist in capacity building to ensure that the Region meets its increased blood collection goals, the Americorps member will work critical customer service positions at Franklin County area blood drives on a regular basis. This member will devise and/or implement plans and processes to increase and streamline blood drive volunteer involvement within the region. This will include, among other things, volunteer continuing education, volunteer training, volunteer career pathing, and volunteer team building. This member will assist DS in volunteer scheduling for blood drives and the telerecruitment department and complete manual and electronic documentation involved in the DS scheduling and volunteer management systems. This will be a full time position, and the member must complete 1700 hours in 12 months.

Key Responsibilities
·       Assist in the evaluation of the current scheduling system and devise and implement ideas to improve the current process
·       Conduct and document volunteer visits at blood drives throughout Franklin County to ensure the needs of volunteers and the Region are met
·       Schedule blood drive and telerecruitment volunteers using manual and electronic processes
·       Aid in capacity building to enable the Region to meet its blood collection goals by working critical customer service roles at blood drives throughout Franklin County
·       Participate in regional and departmental events and activities

Requirements
·       Must be at least 18 years of age at the start of the program
·       Must have a high school diploma or GED
·       Must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. National, or lawful resident alien of the U.S.
·       Must possess a current and valid driver’s license; good driving record
·              This person must have their own reliable vehicle and be willing and able to travel to blood drives throughout Franklin County
·       Must commit to a full time position, completing 1700 hours in 12 months
