Talent vs. Experience

It is simply amazing how we somewhat take for granted how effective experience can be. In any situation I can think of, a lot of times experience beats talent when talent doesn’t have experience. Take for instance the Bulls vs. Celtics playoff series, would Boston really have beat the young talented Bulls had the Bulls had playoff experience? Bulls star Derrick Rose could have led his team past the NBA champion Celtics if he were in a playoff series before. There were so many times when the Celtics just picked the Bulls apart in Game 7 with easy pick and rolls and the Bulls just couldn’t adjust. The Bulls’ lack of experience cost them the season, maybe next year they’ll be better prepared.

How about in everyday life? Does experience really matter? What happens when you’re the most talented young prospect at a company with a great amount of intelligence, can you really have better results than the not so talented employee that has been working the same job for ten years? Even though you’re talented, the veteran knows what to expect. His/her wisdom will guide them through situations in which you couldn’t make it through. You can’t be taught in the classroom what you need to know in the real world.

In any situation you find yourself in, never take experience for granted, because it can help you more than any natural talent, or anything you learned from the books. Take heed to wisdom and experience, or like Derrick Rose and the Bulls, learn for yourself how truly valuable experience can be.
