For the 2009-2010 academic school year, the Black Graduate and Professional Student Caucus (BGPSC) at The Ohio State University will be sponsoring a series of workshops to assist Juniors and Seniors with the application process. We will cover an array of topics such as researching schools and programs, building a resume and curriculum vitae, writing personal statements, acquiring letters of recommendations, and understanding the lives of graduate and professional students. Buck-I-Serv: The Alternative Break Program at Ohio State: BUCK-I-SERV trips are week-long, substance free, community service trips all across the country open to ANY Ohio State-Columbus student. Students get to travel to a new city, serve in that community, and sightsee in the evenings after service. Leader applications are due Friday, October 9 at 5:00pm and Participant applications are due on Monday, October 12 at 5:00pm. We are looking for trip LEADERS and participants for 10 amazing trips this year! Trip dates are from December 12-19, 2009. We are traveling to Mississippi, Florida, South Carolina, Missouri, Minnesota, New York, Boston, Washington, DC, Georgia, and Louisiana this year for 10 unforgettable experiences working with projects ranging from Habitat for Humanity to Animal Rescue. ColumbusReads: Make the difference in the life of a child by tutoring for 1 hr each week.
Ohio State students work with 2 Elementary schools in Columbus to tutor the kindergartners and first graders in reading. The program is completely organized by the school, tutors simply show up and work with their students each week for one hour. Transportation is provided if needed. If you are looking to get into the field of education or simply want to make a huge impact on the life of a Columbus child, this is for you! Make A Difference Day:
Students from Ohio State will come together with students from another Big Ten university again this fall for a day of service in conjunction with a Buckeye Football Game. This year students will travel by bus to State College, Pennsylvania on Friday, November 6th. Friday evening they will participate in fun activities on PSU's campus and then on Saturday morning they will be spent participating in a service project with students from Penn State. Journal of Undergrad Research looking for Submissions and Undergrads to fill Reviewer Positions
JUROS, the Journal of Undergraduate Research at OSU, is looking for undergraduate research papers as well as undergraduate student reviewers. We are the only journal currently to accept research papers from any field studied at Ohio State. There is no submission fee, authors retain all rights to their works and faculty/grad students are allowed to be co-authors on undergrad papers. Two undergraduate reviewers edit papers and, once all edits are made, the paper is published both online and in a hard-copy edition, Oculus. No prior research experience is necessary to be a student reviewer, and students from all disciplines are welcome to apply! Student Wellness Center looking for work-student students
The Student Wellness Center is looking for reliable work-study students. Number of hours per week depends on each students grant and hours needed to work will vary, but are mainly lunch and afternoon shifts between 2:30-7pm on weekdays (no weekends). Responsibilities include receptionist responsibilities such as answering phones, managing appointment calendars, handling money, multi-tasking. Must be comfortable with sexual health issues and be able to maintain confidentiality, be non-judgmental, and able to handle very sensitive interactions with students/clients. ‘I Am What I Learn’ Video Contest
In two minutes or less, America's students have an opportunity to show the nation and the world how far education can take them and how they will achieve their dreams. On September 8, President Barack Obama called on the nation's students to take greater responsibility for their education. Now, the U.S. Department of Education is asking students to respond by participating in a national video contest titled “I Am What I Learn.” “Students share responsibility for their education and for fulfilling their dreams,” Secretary Duncan said. “This video contest is an opportunity for young people to share their stories about where their education and career training can take them. At the same time, I encourage parents, schools and communities to play a strong role in their stories by being accountable for forming stronger partnerships that guide students to their goals.”
The contest is open to active middle, secondary and college students, ages 13 and older. Starting today, September 21, through November 2, students can submit their videos up to two minutes long at http://www.Ed.gov/IAmWhatILearn. There are no restrictions on the style of the video, as students are encouraged to be creative! From November 2 – 9, video submissions will be reviewed by a panel of judges, including Secretary Duncan. Judges will choose 10 finalists to promote on the U.S. Department of Education's official YouTube channel. From November 9 - 24, the public can view the finalists' videos and vote on their favorites. The top three finalists with the most votes will each win $1,000 prize issued by the U.S. Department of Education. Winners will be announced the week of December 1. The Department's video contest is modeled after similar contests launched by the Department of Health and Human Services and the Environmental Protection Agency. They also include cash prizes. Winning videos will be chosen based on the following criteria: use of creativity, strength and originality of content, and ability to inspire.
The contest rules are as follows:
• Each video must be submitted by an active student, age 13 and older.
• Contestants chosen as finalists will be contacted through their YouTube account and must respond within seven business days to confirm eligibility.
• Finalists under the age of 18 must submit a parental consent form.
• Video must be two minutes or less in length.
• The Department of Education’s website ( www.ED.gov/IAmWhatILearn) must be featured in the video.
• The video content must be original.
• The video must convey the importance of education, as well as the student’s individual academic goals.
