Gathering of Men
The staff of the Bell Resource Center invites you to attend its Gathering of Men program. The purpose of the program is to provide students, faculty, and staff an opportunity to network with each other. Students will also have the chance to learn how faculty and staff can assist them in meeting their academic and career goals.
The event will take place on Wednesday, October 25 at 6:00 p.m. at the John Glenn Institute, Learning Education Center room 130, in Page Hall. Dr. Osei Appiah, Professor, OSU School of Communication will be the featured speaker. Please RSVP by October 20th by sending a reply to this email or by calling the office, 247-4765.
Behind the Music: Hip Hop Takes Over the World
A Two Day Conference
October 20, 2006 8pm at the RPAC amphitheatre
Hip Hop Detoxx Social and Emotional Therapeutic Learning Program.
This program has been developed and tailored to target the specific challenges of urban youth within the Chicago Public School System through a strength-based approach to addressing social and emotional development. Participants will critically analyze life issues and struggles, while exploring and testing their own reality, self-concept, decision-making skills, attitudes, behaviors, and emotional states.

Rosa Clemente
Ms. Clemente is the founder of Know Thy Self Speakers Bureau which has created two successful college/universities tours, Dare to Struggle, Dare to Win and the Speak Truth to Power tours and most recently has created the Hip Hop Skool for Social Justice. With an earned degree from the University of Albany and a Masters of Professional Studies form Cornell University she is committed to scholar-activism and youth organizing. She has delivered lectures on topics such as African-American and Latino/a Intercultural Relations, Hip-Hop Activism, The History of the Young Lords Party, and Organizing to Free U.S. Political Prisoners. In 2001 she was a youth representative at the United Nations World Conference against Racism in South Africa.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Tutoring with grade school students
The Outreach Program in the Center for the Study and Teaching of Writing (CSTW) has expanded its services! For the past seven years, we have had a third and fourth grade after-school tutoring program, and now this year, we are able to add the fifth grade to our program! Outreach consultants Jack Fette and Nancy McDonald-Kenworthy are seeking volunteers who would like to tutor children at Africentric Elementary School, 300 E. Livingston Avenue, 43215.
We need 30 committed volunteers who would be willing to tutor at Africentric once a week on Wednesdays from 3:45 until 5:15 pm beginning on Oct 18 (arrival time 3:30 p.m). If you are interested, please contact Jack at fette.8@osu.edu or Nancy at mcdonald-knwrthy.1@osu.edu to schedule training as soon as possible. Or you may call CSTW at 688-5865. Academic Competitiveness Grant
An Academic Competitiveness Grant will provide up to $750 for the first year of undergraduate study and up to $1,300 for the second year of undergraduate study to full-time students who are U.S citizens, eligible for a Federal Pell Grant, and who had successfully completed a rigorous high school program, as determined by the state or local education agency and recognized by the Secretary of Education. Second year students must also have maintained a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0. The program will be available for the first time for the 2006-07 school year for first year students who graduated from high school after January 1, 2006 and for second year students who graduated from high school after January 1, 2005. The Academic Competitiveness Grant award is in addition to the student's Pell Grant award.
If you can answer YES to all of the following questions, you may potentially be eligible to receive an Academic Competitiveness Grant.
---Are you a U.S. citizen?
---Did you graduate from high school after January 1, 2005?
---Are you eligible to receive a Pell Grant?
---Will you be enrolled as a full-time first or second year student in a two-year or four-year degree program?
If you could not answer YES to all of the above questions, you do not qualify to receive an Academic Competitiveness Grant. However, you may still qualify to receive other types of federal student financial aid. If you have not completed a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), please go to www.fafsa.ed.gov and apply today.
NATIONAL SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS ACCESS TO RETAIN TALENT GRANT OR NATIONAL SMART GRANT
A National SMART Grant will provide up to $4,000 for each of the third and fourth years of undergraduate study to full-time students who are U.S. citizens, eligible for a Federal Pell Grant, and majoring in physical, life, or computer sciences, mathematics, technology, or engineering or in a foreign language determined critical to national security. The student must also have maintained a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 in coursework required for the major. The National SMART Grant award is in addition to the student's Pell Grant award.
To be eligible to receive a National SMART Grant, you must be able to answer YES to all of the following questions:
---Are you a US citizen?
---Are you eligible to receive a Pell Grant?
---Are you enrolled as a full-time third or fourth year student in a baccalaureate degree program?
---Do you have a 3.0 cumulative grade point average?
---Are you currently enrolled in an eligible major in one of the following categories: Computer Science, Engineering, Critical Foreign Languages, Life Sciences, Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Technology, or Multidisciplinary Studies?
If you could not answer YES to all of the above questions, you do not qualify to receive a National SMART Grant. However, you may still qualify to receive other types of federal student financial aid. New Voices Gulf Coast Transformation Fellowship
The Gulf Coast region and communities affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita deserve continued financial and moral support. Many needs remain unmet, many problems unresolved. Human rights are not as respected as they ought to be. New Voices, a national grantmaking initiative focused on leadership development, nonprofit strengthening, and empowering diverse individuals will focus its resources over the next three years on the Gulf Coast region. A concentration of New Voices grant awards in the region would 1) create opportunities for talented emerging leaders to speak out on behalf of disadvantaged or marginalized communities, 2) build the capacity of small nonprofit organizations struggling with startup or survival, and 3) support timely social justice projects or initiatives in the region. Our sponsored program areas include:
* Racial Justice
* Migrant and Refugee Rights
* Women's Rights
* Human Rights
* Reproductive Rights
* HIV/AIDS
