Re-Imagining the Crisis of Black Masculinity

The Department of African American and African Studies is having a seminar, AAAS 759 on Tuesdays 2:30-5:18 in the Journalism Building for Spring Quarter. This seminar examines the interplay between the imagination and how black men in literature, history and popular culture construct and perform black masculinity in ways that defy popular rhetoric of endangerment and black men in crisis. We will consider how we as cultural consumers, as well as how black male artists, imagine a black male subjectivity that embodies a sense of agency and the freedom to choose their identities.

We will also reflect upon how specific obstacles—racial authenticity, heteronormativity and anti-intellectualism—have the potential to limit the ability of both black men and the popular media to imagine empowering, healthy black masculinities.
