Hip Hop Literacies Conference

Scholars from as far away as Hawaii are coming to The Ohio State University to partake in the Hiphop Literacies Conference, May 19th & 20th. Featured speakers are Dr. Marc Lamont Hill, Teachers College, Columbia University. He will give a keynote lecture on Hiphop Pedagogy.  Dr. Gwendolyn Pough, Syracuse University, will deliver a keynote lecture on Hiphop Feminism. Toni Blackman, author, artist, and U.S. Cultural Envoy will facilitate the empowerment of women's voices through the Rhyme Like A Girl (RLAG) workshop, while lyricist Daddy-O, founder of the first Hiphop band Stetasonic along with Groove U Music Industry Arts College founder, Dwight Heckelman, will facilitate a workshop on Hiphop and Technology. Another highly anticipated workshop, Hiphop in the Classroom for Teachers, will be co-facilitated by educator and artist Speak Williams and Dr. Michael Anthony Williams. Undergrad Research Opportunity

Dr. Terrell L. Strayhorn is seeking an undergraduate research assistant to volunteer (academic credit or work-study possible) 5-10 hours per week on a project that examines the experiences of historically underrepresented minorities in American higher education. Specific projects focus on the experiences of (1) racial/ethnic minority undergraduates attending predominantly White and historically Black colleges and universities (2) GLBT students of color in college (3) minority men in STEM fields or (4) social psychological factors that predict success; I am happy to match candidates to a project that suits their interests/strengths. The successful candidate must have (a) interest in the topic/research (b) demonstrated skills in communicating effectively in written and oral form, (c) proficiency in English language. Though not required, it may be helpful if a candidate has prior experience in qualitative or survey research methods, interviewing, or analysis.

CBL's Thoughtful Theater: The Souls of Black Girls

TONIGHT 7:00-9:00 pm in room 134 of the Frank W. Hale Jr. Black Cultural Center.

In collaboration with Ms. Destiny Jackson, this will also serve as a precursor to the 33rd Annual African American Heritage Festival's Sunday Themed Event where you can meet the producer, Daphne Valerius!




The Souls of Black Girls is a provocative news documentary that takes a critical look at media images--how they are instituted, established and controlled. The documentary also examines the relationship between the historical and existing media images of women of color and raises the question of whether they may be suffering from a self-image disorder as a result of trying to attain the standards of beauty that are celebrated in media images.
The documentary features candid interviews with young women discussing their self-image and social commentary from Actresses Regina King and Jada Pinkett Smith, PBS Washington Week Moderator Gwen Ifill, Rapper/Political Activist Chuck D, and Cultural Critic Michaela Angela Davis, among others. The Souls of Black Girls is a piece that attempts to provoke honest dialogue and critical thinking among women of color about media images and our present condition—internally and externally.

Undergraduate Research Opportunity: Human Development and Family Science

This is a research position only for students at OSU who were awarded work study. You must have been awarded work study money as part of your financial aid package in order to apply.



Dr. Natasha Slesnick and Denitza Bantchevska are seeking a work study student research assistant ($7.50/hour) for the OSU Mothers Research Project and the OSU-Maryhaven Project. The OSU Mothers Research Project and the OSU-Maryhaven Project work with substance-using and homeless women and their children.

The ideal candidates must be available 10 -15 hours per week or more (including holiday breaks) with 4 hour blocks of time open. The position requires a conscientious, self-motivated and professional person, with a mature attitude, and a willingness to do new tasks as assigned. Must have basic word processing skills and be interested in gaining experience in a research setting.

Responsibilities include: Transcription and coding of family therapy sessions; data collection; quality assurance; maintenance and protection of confidential information; and, various clerical duties.

Abstract
The U.S. penal system is increasingly being cast as an engine for reinstituting Jim Crow, that 19th century condition of near slavery for southern Blacks. In this view, the large numbers of men of color who are behind bars or on parole in this country involve more than just "folks who've been sent away." Men and women returning from a period of incarceration are creating a large and growing American underclass. Their marginal status in their communities has public health consequences that are particularly problematic for our national HIV/AIDS pandemic. This lecture will explore these consequences and will propose a set of interventions that would improve the health status of men caught up in this nation's system of mass incarceration. There will be a reception before and after the lecture.

Volunteering Opportunity

Seeking college students to help mentor children first grade through fourth grade teaching kids their first steps on getting to college.


I wanted to forward information on College Mentors for Kids to you. I’m the advisor for this organization and they are in recruiting mode.

In my experience, this is one of the best access groups we work with. It is all student-run. Each week during the school year, 80 first through fourth graders (from Linden STEM in Columbus City Schools and West Franklin Elementary in South Western City Schools) are on our campus learning about the steps to take to get to college.The curriculum includes financial literacy, college knowledge, community service and diversity. The college students who participate are amazing and the relationships they form can be life changing for the kids because of the consistency of the contact.By the end of the year, we’ve created 80 little diehard Buckeyes.

showcase your work? Well we have the event for you! We want YOU to submit your art
to OUAB’s Best in Show event this spring! Best In Show is an art festival open to OSU
students within every field of study and every form of art. Everything from painting to
sculptures and dance groups to a cappella groups is included. Simply complete the form
below, bring your art or group to the event, and we will showcase it for all students to
see! All of the submissions will be judged and the top submissions will be featured in the
Ohio Union in addition to winning a gift card. Prizes include a $200 gift card for 1st
