Ohio State Holiday High School Visit Program
Is your organization looking for the perfect service project that could impact the lives of future Ohio State students?
Are your students interested in going back to their high school to tell students about the experiences they can take advantage of as an Ohio State student?
If the answer is “yes” to either of these questions, the Holiday High School Visit Program could be just what they are looking for!!!
The Office of Undergraduate Admissions and First Year Experience is interested in finding students around the university who may be interested in joining efforts in the recruitment of prospective high school students. Information sessions will be held in Enarson Hall room 100. Each session will last 30 minutes. The sessions are as follows:
November 13 – 6:00 – 6:30 p.m. November 13 – 6:30 – 7:00 p.m.
November 14 – 6:00 – 6:30 p.m. November 14 – 6:30 – 7:00 p.m.
November 15 – 7:00 – 7:30 p.m. November 15 – 7:30 – 8:00 p.m.
The goal is to have current students share their experiences to give prospective students an idea of the opportunities Ohio State has to offer. Students only need to attend one of these sessions to learn about this great opportunity.

Tutoring with grade school students
The Outreach Program in the Center for the Study and Teaching of Writing (CSTW) has expanded its services! For the past seven years, we have had a third and fourth grade after-school tutoring program, and now this year, we are able to add the fifth grade to our program! Outreach consultants Jack Fette and Nancy McDonald-Kenworthy are seeking volunteers who would like to tutor children at Africentric Elementary School, 300 E. Livingston Avenue, 43215.
We need 30 committed volunteers who would be willing to tutor at Africentric once a week on Wednesdays from 3:45 until 5:15 pm beginning on Oct 18 (arrival time 3:30 p.m). If you are interested, please contact Jack at fette.8@osu.edu or Nancy at mcdonald-knwrthy.1@osu.edu to schedule training as soon as possible. Or you may call CSTW at 688-5865. The University of Minnesota Po Program
The University of Minnesota announces a new Po Program to attract scholars (US citizens or permanent residents) with potential to pursue future faculty positions at the University of Minnesota and at other top research universities. Promising scholars from all disciplines with research interests in one or more of the following priorities should apply: (1) scholarship that contributes to the understanding of diversity in its multiple forms; (2) strong interest in interdisciplinary research and scholarship or creative work; and (3) engagement in partnerships with communities outside of the academy. Fellows will be mentored by the University's senior faculty to establish an independent research agenda and will participate in professional development seminars to build intellectual community to
prepare fellows for tenure-track academic positions. In addition to
conducting research, fellows will teach at least one course per year. For the 2007-2008 academic year up to three fellow >for a minimum duration of one year beginning in September 2007. Awards may be renewable for a second year based on performance. Although stipend amounts will vary by discipline, fellows will receive a minimum

Academic Competitiveness Grant
An Academic Competitiveness Grant will provide up to $750 for the first year of undergraduate study and up to $1,300 for the second year of undergraduate study to full-time students who are U.S citizens, eligible for a Federal Pell Grant, and who had successfully completed a rigorous high school program, as determined by the state or local education agency and recognized by the Secretary of Education. Second year students must also have maintained a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0. The program will be available for the first time for the 2006-07 school year for first year students who graduated from high school after January 1, 2006 and for second year students who graduated from high school after January 1, 2005. The Academic Competitiveness Grant award is in addition to the student's Pell Grant award.
If you can answer YES to all of the following questions, you may potentially be eligible to receive an Academic Competitiveness Grant.
---Are you a U.S. citizen?
---Did you graduate from high school after January 1, 2005?
---Are you eligible to receive a Pell Grant?
---Will you be enrolled as a full-time first or second year student in a two-year or four-year degree program?
If you could not answer YES to all of the above questions, you do not qualify to receive an Academic Competitiveness Grant. However, you may still qualify to receive other types of federal student financial aid. NATIONAL SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS ACCESS TO RETAIN TALENT GRANT OR NATIONAL SMART GRANT
A National SMART Grant will provide up to $4,000 for each of the third and fourth years of undergraduate study to full-time students who are U.S. citizens, eligible for a Federal Pell Grant, and majoring in physical, life, or computer sciences, mathematics, technology, or engineering or in a foreign language determined critical to national security. The student must also have maintained a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 in coursework required for the major. The National SMART Grant award is in addition to the student's Pell Grant award.
To be eligible to receive a National SMART Grant, you must be able to answer YES to all of the following questions:
---Are you a US citizen?
---Are you eligible to receive a Pell Grant?
---Are you enrolled as a full-time third or fourth year student in a baccalaureate degree program?
---Do you have a 3.0 cumulative grade point average?
---Are you currently enrolled in an eligible major in one of the following categories: Computer Science, Engineering, Critical Foreign Languages, Life Sciences, Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Technology, or Multidisciplinary Studies?
If you could not answer YES to all of the above questions, you do not qualify to receive a National SMART Grant. However, you may still qualify to receive other types of federal student financial aid. A concentration of New Voices grant awards in the region would 1) create opportunities for talented emerging leaders to speak out on behalf of disadvantaged or marginalized communities, 2) build the capacity of small nonprofit organizations struggling with startup or survival, and 3) support timely social justice projects or initiatives in the region. An Academic Competitiveness Grant will provide up to $750 for the first year of undergraduate study and up to $1,300 for the second year of undergraduate study to full-time students who are U.S citizens, eligible for a Federal Pell Grant, and who had successfully completed a rigorous high school program, as determined by the state or local education agency and recognized by the Secretary of Education. Second year students must also have maintained a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0. The program will be available for the first time for the 2006-07 school year for first year students who graduated from high school after January 1, 2006 and for second year students who graduated from high school after January 1, 2005. The Academic Competitiveness Grant award is in addition to the student's Pell Grant award.
If you can answer YES to all of the following questions, you may potentially be eligible to receive an Academic Competitiveness Grant.

NATIONAL SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS ACCESS TO RETAIN TALENT GRANT OR NATIONAL SMART GRANT
A National SMART Grant will provide up to $4,000 for each of the third and fourth years of undergraduate study to full-time students who are U.S. citizens, eligible for a Federal Pell Grant, and majoring in physical, life, or computer sciences, mathematics, technology, or engineering or in a foreign language determined critical to national security. The student must also have maintained a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 in coursework required for the major. The National SMART Grant award is in addition to the student's Pell Grant award.
To be eligible to receive a National SMART Grant, you must be able to answer YES to all of the following questions:
---Are you a US citizen?
---Are you eligible to receive a Pell Grant?
---Are you enrolled as a full-time third or fourth year student in a baccalaureate degree program?
---Do you have a 3.0 cumulative grade point average?
---Are you currently enrolled in an eligible major in one of the following categories: Computer Science, Engineering, Critical Foreign Languages, Life Sciences, Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Technology, or Multidisciplinary Studies?
If you could not answer YES to all of the above questions, you do not qualify to receive a National SMART Grant. However, you may still qualify to receive other types of federal student financial aid. Human rights are not as respected as they ought to be. New Voices, a national grantmaking initiative focused on leadership development, nonprofit strengthening, and empowering diverse individuals will focus its resources over the next three years on the Gulf Coast region. A concentration of New Voices grant awards in the region would 1) create opportunities for talented emerging leaders to speak out on behalf of disadvantaged or marginalized communities, 2) build the capacity of small nonprofit organizations struggling with startup or survival, and 3) support timely social justice projects or initiatives in the region.
