There are TWO Ohio Campus Compact AmeriCorps*VISTA positions working on college access issues and with first generation college students in Columbus beginning July, 2011. One position is here on campus with the Economic Access Initiative and the other is with our community partner, I Know I Can (Amy Wade). The VISTA position is an excellent opportunity for graduates looking for a year of transition to develop professional skills and/or contacts while also earning an education stipend to use to pay down undergraduate student loans or apply to graduate school. POSITION 1:
AmeriCorps*VISTA Coordinator of College Access and Success at Ohio State
Assists with the planning, implementation and evaluation of college access efforts within the Central Ohio community. Provides college awareness/college access services and programming to community centers, schools, and education-oriented nonprofit entities; assists with the development of college awareness resources; supports Blueprint:College programming. Coordinates and serves as the point of contact for campus-based college exposure activities. Recruits, coordinates, interviews, selects and supervises M3C Fellows, a group of low-income, first generation students who deliver 300 hours of college access service in the community annually. Fosters strong community relationships with partner agencies and supports campus and community capacity building for college access initiatives. Coordinates and/or completes special assignments and projects as directed.
Experience:
Bachelor’s degree required; experience working with elementary and middle school-aged students desired, ability to work with diverse populations; experience working with volunteers desired; experience in a higher education, school, and/or community center environment desired.

POSITION 2:
AmeriCorps*VISTA Coordinator of College Access and Success at I Know I Can
Assists I Know I Can (IKIC), a college access organization serving Columbus City Schools, with the planning, implementation and evaluation of college retention efforts. Assists IKIC’s Director of Retention with the development of pre-enrollment programming, lunch and learn workshop curriculum; and, higher education Individual Development Account (IDA) promotion and administration for low-income, first-generation CCS graduates pursuing higher education at colleges and universities in the central Ohio community. Supports the recruitment, coordination and training of campus-based peer mentors and develops ongoing training and materials for mentors; combats college attrition issues among underserved populations by managing a re-enrollment campaign. Fosters strong higher education relationships with partner institutions and promotes campus and community capacity building for college success initiatives. Researches retention best practices for low-income and first generation populations and develops retention interventions; supports retention fundraising and data collection and evaluation, including the development of college retention benchmarks. Coordinates and/or completes special assignments and projects as directed.
Experience:
Bachelor’s degree required; ability to work with diverse populations; experience working with volunteers desired; experience within a higher education, school, and/or community center environment desired; curriculum development and research/evaluation skills preferred.
