IUPUI Coach Ron Hunter Goes Barefoot For Africa

Head coach Ron Hunter goes barefoot in order to bring awareness to the situation of people in Africa who are not able to afford shoes.

"There should be no one in this world walking around barefoot," Hunter said. "I just can't even imagine that. I can't imagine my children doing it."

He will coach his upcoming game on January 24, 2008 barefoot against his team's opponent Oakland(Mich.).

This is a great thing that Mr. Hunter is doing and it is about time that someone has brought to light what goes on in Africa.

Mr. Hunter elaborated on why he chose the 24th as the date he would decide to do this for the raising of awareness. It was chosen to be done on this day because it was the closest day to Martin Luther King Jr. Day which occurred on Monday January 21, 2008.

Another great thing about this story is the fact that Mr. Hunter has an African freshman on the team named, Christian Siakam. It has been said that he gave a watery-eyed thank you to his coach as he has family members who have never owned shoes.
